Caring For Sheep Across the Estate
Sheep farming is an important part of the estate, with a well-established flock managed throughout the year. From lambing in late winter to grazing across the fields in spring and summer, the flock plays a key role in both food production and the wider management of the land.
A Well-Established Enterprise
We manage a flock of around 1,500 sheep, including Kent Romney and Suffolk Mule breeds. The flock forms an integral part of the estate’s mixed farming approach, contributing to a balanced and sustainable system.
A key moment in the farming year
Lambing takes place in late winter and is one of the most important and intensive periods on the estate. Ewes are brought indoors ahead of lambing, where they are carefully monitored and prepared, with close attention given to both ewes and newborn lambs.
Supporting ewes and lambs
Following lambing, ewes and their lambs remain indoors for a short period before being turned out to pasture. This early stage is carefully managed to ensure lambs are strong and healthy as they begin grazing and developing in the open fields.
Working with pasture and rotation
The flock grazes a mix of permanent pasture and temporary grass leys, which are often part of the wider arable rotation. This supports both high-quality grazing and the long-term health of the soil, helping to maintain a balanced farming system.
Managing the Marshland
The flock plays an important role in grazing and maintaining areas of marshland across the estate. Carefully managed grazing helps control scrub growth, supports a varied habitat structure and contributes to the long-term health of the landscape throughout the seasons.
Producing Quality Lamb
Our sheep are raised as part of a considered and well-managed system, with a focus on animal welfare and quality throughout the year. This approach ensures that the lamb produced reflects both the care taken and the environment it is raised in.
