Growing Fruit in the Kent Fruit Belt

Orchards & Fruit Growing

Fruit growing is a central part of the estate, with orchards producing cherries, plums, pears and apples. Located in North Kent — historically known as the ‘fruit belt’ within the Garden of England — the soil and microclimate provide ideal conditions for growing high-quality fruit.

A Range of Varieties Grown with Care

Our Orchards

We grow several types of fruit, with multiple varieties of each, allowing us to supply both traditional and modern markets. Our produce is sold through a combination of local outlets and national suppliers.

Cherries

Traditionally grown, carefully harvested

Our cherries are grown in the traditional way, without tunnels, allowing them to benefit fully from local conditions. Harvest typically begins in late June and requires careful timing, as the fruit must be picked quickly at peak ripeness.

Our historic “Blackbird” branding reflected this with cherries known as ‘The Pick of the Bunch’.

Pears

A leading UK producer

We are one of the largest producers of Conference pears in the UK, with a significant acreage dedicated to this variety. Many British Conference pears found in shops may have been grown here on the estate.

Apples

Popular varieties, grown locally

We grow a range of apple varieties, including Gala, Jazz and Tutti. Known for their distinctive colouring, crisp texture and balanced flavour, these varieties remain popular choices within the UK market.

Harvest and Quality

Working with the season

Harvest is a key moment in the year, requiring careful timing and coordination. Fruit is picked at the right stage of ripeness and handled with care to ensure it reaches customers in the best possible condition.

From Orchard to Market

Supplying local and national suppliers

Our fruit is supplied to a range of suppliers, from local outlets to national retailers, maintaining a strong connection between the land and the food it produces.

"We’ve worked with the GH Dean Estate for a number of years. The fruit is always of a high standard, with good consistency throughout the season. It’s a reliable supply we’re pleased to work with."
